Washington D.C., May 31, 2023 - GPE is deeply concerned by the passage into law of the Anti-Homosexuality Act in Uganda, and the potential impact on children’s human right to access education free from fear, violence and persecution.

The Act calls for harsh sentences, including life imprisonment and the death penalty, for anyone convicted.

GPE reiterates the rights of all children and young people to a quality education, irrespective of their sexual orientation, gender expression or identity.

GPE is considering next steps in coordination with partners to assess the potential impacts of this law on the rights of all children to access quality education.

Working closely with partners, GPE remains committed to supporting inclusive education in Uganda and elsewhere in the world.
